Unexpected opportunities!07.12.06 // Mike Golding

Alex and I met Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP, Minister for Sport in London today. We were invited to recount our recent Southern Ocean adventures to him and a dozen or so of his direct team at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport in Cockspur Street SW1. Everyone listened intently as Alex and I in our now practised double act recounted our recent experiences from the terror of Alex's keel breaking to our joyful arrival in Cape Town. The conversation then extended further into the advancing place of sailing in British sport and the importance of the RYA in promoting increased participation and education in sailing at all levels. Sailing is often a tough sport to sell compared to other more straightforward sports, but I would like to feel that Alex and I did not waste this opportunity with such an influential group. From one extreme to another - I rushed away from this meeting and belted back to Warsash to attend Soren's first nativity play in the local church. Soren was a snowman - complete with carrot nose, bowler hat, bright red scarf and painted sheet. A perfect and unexpected benefit of my premature return home.
